KOORAGANG EXPANSION
PWCS is commited to invest in additional capacity at Kooragang Coal Terminal to meet the export coal demand from the Hunter Valley.
The current combined shiploading capacity from the two terminals operated by PWCS at Kooragang and Carrington is 102 million tonnes per year.
Recent expansion at Koorgang Coal Terminal was commissioned in March 2007. This expansion consisted:
- A fourth stockpile on Pad D with a capacity of over half a million tonnes
- A fourth stacking stream comprising two conveyors (03.11 & 03.15) and a stacking machine (03.22)
- Improvement in the capacity of the existing Pad C
- Upgrade of the water management system
- An enhanced central control system
The additional storage capacity arising from the development of Pad D and changes to the existing Pad C increases the total storage capacity at Kooragang by over half a million tonnes.
The new stacking stream receives coal from existing dump stations at a rate of 8,000 tonnes per hour. The availability of this new stacking stream will reduce delays in receival of coal by rail by minimising time spent waiting for a stacking machine to relocate between receival stockpiles.
Construction of the new facility commenced in October 2005 with the import of sand for the earthworks and the commencement of ground improvement works. This work continued during 2006 with structural, mechanical and electrical works prior to the delivery and erection of the new stacker in late 2006.
