KOORAGANG EXPANSION
PWCS is committed to invest in additional throughput capacity to meet the export coal demand from the Hunter Valley.
The current combined throughput capacity of PWCS is 102 million tonnes per year. PWCS has however recently obtained further development approval to increase the throughput of the Kooragang Coal Terminal up to a limit of 120 million tonnes per year.
Expansion works at the Kooragang Coal Terminal have been progressively undertaken to meet demand since approval to expand to 77 Mtpa was granted in November 1996. The latest expansion activities include:
- A fourth stockpile with a capacity of over half a million tonnes;
- A fourth stacking stream comprising of two additional Stackers and associated conveyors;
- A fourth ship loading stream comprising an additional Reclaimer and associated stockyard conveyor;
- Upgrade of the water management system;
- An enhanced central control system; and
- Upgrade of two of the three receival systems to improve receival capacity.
All of the plant and equipment installed contributes to the total increase in throughput capacity of PWCS for the Hunter Valley Coal Industry.
Further scope of the approved Kooragang Coal Terminal Expansion is yet to be commenced and will be implemented as demand increases.
2008 saw the commencement of engineering design works for the extension of Pads C and D to full length and the fourth ship loading berth to further increase throughput capacity as demand requires.
