SECURITY

The Port of Newcastle is an important component of Australia's national economy and therefore security is paramount.  Employees, Contractors and Visitors can and must play a vital role in providing information regarding security related information about our Port and our Port facilities.

Under the Maritime Transport & Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003 (“the Act”), all Port facilities must have an approved Maritime Security Plan.

PWCS has an obligation under the Act to control authorised access to its facilities.  Unauthorised access is not permitted and is an offence.  Authorised entry to PWCS facilities is governed by PWCS policies and procedures, the Act and its Regulations.

In order to manage its legal, security, Occupational Health & Safety and environmental obligations both PWCS sites are fenced and closed to the general public except by as set out above.  Any persons found on its sites without the company's approval will be subject to appropriate legal action.

To complement the above, as PWCS must ensure its obligations under the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2000 are properly managed, PWCS has stringent safety systems in place, particularly relating to areas where machinery is operating.  PWCS’ machinery is extremely large, fast moving and in many cases operated remotely and automatically.  Given the dangerous nature of PWCS’ operations, our staff and contractors undergo strict and regular operational and safety training.  PWCS’ terminals and equipment must not, obviously, be accessed by people without proper training and authorisation.

PWCS security systems include:

  • Security Check Points on access roads;
  • Random vehicle and personal security checks;
  • Close circuit cameras, intrusion alarms and tracking devices;
  • Access control systems; and
  • Use of Personal Identification card systems including Maritime Security Identification Cards (MSIC).
